Golden, golden, golden September's here again! |
Hello again and a golden welcome to our September 2025 newsletter.
This month we have a number of kits from AVA, Abris Art, Heritage Crafts, Luca-S and Permin and some new patterns from Cottage Garden Samplings, Needle Work Press and Mirabilia
There's even a little good news for our US customers.
Kits
We have had another delivery of AVA kits. They sell out quickly here and at our supplier, but at last we have more of the Little Mouse with a Winter Hat.
To see the latest AVA kits, visit their gallery here.
Abris Art have introduced Daughter of the Moon (Illustrated), a beautiful fair-skinned maiden with an owl and moon in a stylised and very attractive design.
Heritage Crafts have a new Andean landscape from Mel's Stitches in pastel shades with mountains, cacti and llamas. It's called Llama Drama (although I can't see the drama myself I thought Llamarama might be more descriptive.) But whatever it's called, it's a pretty picture for the llama/cactus/mountains lovers out there.
Heritage Crafts also just announced a new 'Elegance' lady by John Clayton. John's last two 'Elegance' designs have been hugely popular, so he decided to produce one in a similar style, but with a Christmas theme. Her name is Catherine and she does bear a passing resemblance to a rather well-known Catherine. John's Catherine is sitting by a blazing fire in an elegant red dress, cross-stitching. It's a very traditional image for Christmas. We could do with a bit more tradition these days.
We've added some new kits from Luca-S, including a very traditional(!) Christmas scene called Santa's Visit.
From hardy perennial Permin we have a cushion kit for cross stitchers with a butterflies motif. Perfect to bring a touch of nature into a modern setting.
Patterns
Part three of A Year in the Woods II, The Koala by Cottage Garden Samplings, is now in stock. This one features a Koala (what else?) and is harmonious in style with the others in the series, The Wolf and The Sugar Glider.
We now have in stock An Alphabet Duo, a cross stitch pattern by Needle Work Press.
To see the latest patterns we've added please visit this page.
The most recent Mirabilia design Mira Fairy has sections which are interchangeable with MD198 The Empress and MD199 Madam Mermaid.
We're expecting the Mira Fairy charts next week and we already have embellishment packs in stock.
Let us know if you've mixed and matched any of the patterns!
US Customers
We've made some progress in seeing through the mist that surrounds the new US import tariff system.
We believe we now know how to handle it.
Everyone has been caught on the back foot and we only yesterday found out how to get our US duty calculations sorted out.
It will take a while to reprogram our systems so we must ask for your continued patience while we work all this out.
And Finally
Well done if you've got this far!
Our title is from a poem by American children's poet, Annette Wynne (1889-1952).
The poem is called September and, being for children, is short and sweet.
«Golden in the garden,
Golden in the glen,
Golden, golden, golden
September's here again!
Golden in the tree tops,
Golden in the sky
Golden, golden, golden
September's going by!»
Let's hope we all have a golden September remembering those halcyon days when we were children and life was but a golden dream.
But I digress ... May your own September be golden. |

Special Issue for USA Customers |
A warm welcome to this special mid-August 2025 issue of our newsletter.
This issue is for US customers only. Please feel free to ignore it if you live anywhere else!
As you may know, new import tariffs are being introduced by the US Government.
We've just discovered that this will start on 29th August and all goods entering the US from then on will have to pay Customs Duty. What is required of us to comply with these rules is by no means clear.
One thing we do know is that packages won't be allowed in at all unless these charges have been paid in advance. So we will have to suspend sales to the USA from the 25th of August for some time to prevent your purchases being refused entry.
We'll let you know as soon as we have a system for calculating the charges up front and forwarding them to US Customs on your behalf.
Please let us know if you have any questions!

Prosperous Mice from Fields Away |
Greetings and welcome to our newsletter for August 2025!
We won't keep you long as we know you're keen to return to your summer (or winter if you live in a southerly latitude) stitching.
On this month's menu we have kits by newcomer AVA and more from the old guard - Permin and Lanarte. On the pattern side we have new designs from Nora Corbett and Mirabilia, plus a new pattern from Cottage Garden Samplings.
Kits
AVA is a cross stitch maker based in Spain and is now part of the Luca-S group. We're pleased to say that we are now offering AVA kits. Some of them have been snapped up but more will be coming in soon.
You can view the AVA catalogue here.
Permin have released their third new collection of the year mostly Christmas designs, two Pippi Longstocking and also two more quirky designs by Ib Antoni the Danish illustrator and we now have in stock those two new Ib Antoni kits and a set of Santa wine bottle aprons.
Lanarte has released seven new attractive (but expensive) new designs which you can see in their 2025 catalogue.
Designs
The grand Portrait of Lady M is the 200th Mirabilia design.
Nora Corbett's most recent two charts are again from Christmas Fair Red Collection with Mittens and Sweaters.
Part two of A Year in the Woods II by Cottage Garden Samplings is now in stock.
Supplies
Customers often request Kreinik and Petite Treasure braid. Kreinik closed during the lock downs and soon afterwards Douglas Kreinik decided to retire. Rainbow Gallery took over production of Kreinik and all the equipment was moved to California.
However it hasn't all been plain sailing - it took more than six months to set up the equipment again - and everyone has found deliveries of both Kreinik and Petite Treasure braid erratic.
In many cases there is a Petite Treasure braid equivalent for Kreinik #4 and we have a conversion chart that you can download.
There are some conversions that we can't find though, and we have had lots of requests for Kreinik #4 198 which is a very pale green. We appreciate that it would be ideal to be able to order all the materials for a pattern at once but it's not always possible if it includes these metallic threads.
Bargains!
There are Lanarte petit point or tent stitch kits in our Bargain Basement at half original low price.
Going Postal
We have been trying out the parcel courier Evri for larger packages that won't go via the ordinary Royal Mail method. So far we haven't seen any problems with this service but it's early days yet. Don't hesitate to contact us if you do have any problems!
At the moment we're sticking to Royal Mail 1st class for the bulk of what we despatch. Customers have reported unreliability and delay with other Royal Mail services. Perhaps Royal Mail will come up with something better!
And Finally
Our title is taken from a lightly satirical poem by John Betjeman (English poet and writer, 1906-1984)
"...
And prosperous mice from fields away
Come in to hear our organ play,
And under cover of its notes
Eat through the altar's sheaf of oats.
A Low Church mouse, who thinks that I
Am too papistical, and High,
Yet somehow doesn't think it wrong
To munch through Harvest Evensong,
While I, who starve the whole year through,
Must share my food with rodents who
Except at this time of the year
Not once inside the church appear.
Within the human world I know
Such goings-on could not be so,
For human beings only do
What their religion tells them to.
They read the Bible every day
And always, night and morning, pray,
And just like me, the good church mouse,
Worship each week in God's own house,
But all the same it's strange to me
How very full the church can be
With people I don't see at all
Except at Harvest Festival."
Whether you are a believer or not, regular attender or not, we wish you a warm summer (or mild winter as the case may be) and your stitching projects give you lots of pleasure.

We make our world by the beauty we see |
Hello and welcome to our July '25 newsletter, hot off the press for a searing summer.
Summer in Scotland has reverted to type wet and cold - while the rest of the UK basks in warm Sunshine. Bah!
In this month's issue we have new designs from Cottage Garden and Nora Corbett and new kits from AVA stitch so let's have a look.
Designs
Cottage Garden Samplings have a new year-long series and it's called A Year in the Woods II. Part one, The Wolf, is in stock and there will be another design next month.
The newest designs by Nora Corbett are the start of a series called Daughters of the Wind. The designs show Nora's signature elegant, stylised ladies holding their tame pet birds. There are two at the moment: Miss Starling and Miss White Owl. Our first delivery of these has been snapped up but we'll have more arriving soon.
Bothy Threads have published their first book featuring ten designs (shown in our catalogue) for greeting cards by Hannah Dale of Wrendale Designs. Fabric and floss packs are available to purchase for each design separately.
Kits
The Luca-S group which includes LetiStitch has added a new maker to its fold: AVA Stitch. AVA kits are manufactured in Spain and are made with quality materials: Zweigart Aida, DMC and Luca-S stranded cottons and John James needles.
As with other Luca-S offerings the designs are stylish, eye-catching and great value for money.
We have a few kits on order arriving in the next couple of weeks and you can see the current range in our online catalogue.
Postage
A huge 'thank you' to everyone who answered last month's call for comments on UK postage. Most of you said you'd be happy with second class postage but there were a few worrying stories about Royal Mail's 2nd class service (untracked and tracked), especially from those who live in more remote areas.
We've found that 1st class postage is very reliable - even if the promise of next day delivery isn't always honoured by Royal Mail.
Your comments show that the same is not true of 2nd class post.
So we're still thinking about this it's more difficult than we first thought!
We'll keep you in the picture in future editions of this newsletter.
And Finally
This month's title comes from a poem entitled The World We Make by Alfred Grant Walton (1887 1970), US Pastor and Poet
Here's the first verse of this lovely, moral poem:
«We make the world in which we live
By what we gather and what we give,
By our daily deeds and the things we say,
By what we keep or we cast away.»
We hope your July is a time for making your own world beautiful. Happy stitching! |

When June is here |
Greetings from a slightly damp Scotland with a warm welcome to our June 2025 newsletter!
As usual we have added lots of new goodies and you can see the new kits here and the new designs here.
We've got a lot of different topics to cover this time!
UK Postage
It looks like Royal Mail have hiked their prices yet again. A first class large letter weighing less than 100 grams now costs £3.05. Just 10 years ago this was 95p. We still charge the old price of £2.50 but we can't afford to do this for much longer.
Unfortunately, even one skein of thread requires a large letter (because it's more than 5mm thick).
So to reduce costs we're thinking of sending small packages in Britain by second class mail instead of first class.
What do you think?
Would an extra day or two's wait be a problem if you ordered just a few skeins of floss?
Please let us know!
Kits
We've added some lovely new kits from Polish company Merejka including Santa's Little Helper (illustrated) - which sold out almost immediately. Christmas just comes earlier each year!
We've ordered more and they should be in soon please keep looking in.
Merejka have recently announced that their kits will no longer contain paper patterns but instead a digital chart!
This means you will need the (free) Fantastitch mobile app to view the pattern).
We feel that this is a step too far and will not be suitable for all our customers. Please let us know what you think!
The first of these have arrived at our supplier and we have a separate catalogue. We will only order these kits on request.
New Collections
A new Bothy Threads Collection is to be released on the 6th June featuring Halloween and Christmas designs. We'll add it to our current Bothy catalogues.
Floss Organisers
We found another new floss organiser which you might find useful. It's made of plastic and holds 50 skeins. There's a card for writing numbers or symbols which can be removed and replaced with spares. It's compact and practical.
Lady Antheia Embellishment Packs
We've received a delivery of Mill Hill beads and treasures, Nora Corbett and Mirabilia embellishment packs and Caron Waterlilies. So we've been able to make up embellishment packs for Lady Antheia by Bella Filippina.
Magnifica Beads
Unfortunately Mill Hill Magnifica bead packs are still not available separately even though some do turn up in embellishment packs.
Rainbow Gallery and Kreinik
We should have a delivery next week from Rainbow Gallery - who now also manufacture Kreinik braid. They still seem to be having serious production problems and we're expecting only about two thirds of the floss we ordered!
We'll have to wait to see what turns up but if you want to keep an eye out then the places to look are here for Rainbow Gallery and here for Kreinik.
And Finally
From a kinder and gentler age this month's title comes via a poem by James Whitcomb Riley, an American poet who lived from 1849 to 1916
«When June is here--what art have we to sing
The whiteness of the lilies midst the green
Of noon-tranced lawns? Or flash of roses seen
Like redbirds' wings? ...
»
We hope your own June is as kind, gentle, sunny and productive - as the June the poet enjoyed.

If life could be all May |
Welcome to the May 2025 newsletter!
This month's issue is a bit shorter as we've been on holiday for a couple of weeks and we're just catching up!
Let's get started
Patterns
In celebration of their tenth anniversary, Bella Filipina have a new design Lady Antheia (illustrated).
We now have the complete set of Ocean Mermaids by Nora Corbett. There are seven in total, one for each of the seven seas!
Christmas is a long way away but Heart in Hand are first off the blocks with a new Nativity Tiny Town.
Not to be outdone, Nora Corbett has two new `red` designs one of a Christmas stocking and the other of a kitten with Christmas decorations.
Kits
Bothy Threads have released a new collection of the cute Gorjuss girls.
Why not have a look at our catalogue! We can obtain these very quickly and at a discounted price too!
Price increases (i.e. inflation) continue with Heritage Crafts now having to raise their charges.
Rest assured that we'll continue to provide you with the very best combination of price, speed and quality for your needlecraft needs.
Supplies
Following a customer enquiry, we found some DMC Stitchbow items a clever way to store skeins of DMC - or other stranded cottons.
There are several products which complement each other - the mini travel bag goes with the mini inserts; the binder inserts go with a standard ring binder; and the floss holders are there to keep your skeins tidy as you use them!
After months of waiting we finally received a delivery of Mill Hill beads, treasures and embellishment packs. Sadly for purists, individual Magnifica bead packs weren't in there and so Magnifica are still only available inside the embellishment packs which go with specific Mirabilia designs.
European Union
If you missed it in last month's newsletter, we've decided to stop sending to EU customers. This is due to the the new GPSR regulations which appear to be designed to make life harder for overseas companies like us and protect the inefficiencies in Europe's internal suppliers. Rather like the trade tariffs that have been in the news recently - but more insidious. The result is always the same the industry in question (needlecrafts in this case) struggles and eventually dies on the vine.
Some of our long-standing EU customers have written to us and we hope they understand the situation.
We've observed that other small companies are also taking this kind of action and withdrawing from the EU marketplace.
And Finally
Our title comes from a poem by Edith Willis Linn Forbes, US Poet, 1865-1945.
"Fall down, fall down, oh shower of white
And make the ground like snow,
For underneath those petals fair
The fruit is hid, I know.
And hasten on, oh golden sun,
There's joy with every day
Our world would not be half as rich
If life could be all May."
(With our usual apologies to our friends in Australia and New Zealand, who are entering their winter)
We wish you joy in every day and in the richness of the world. |

A Light exists in Spring |
A warm welcome to our April '25 newsletter.
This month we have lots of new kits and charts and a few new accessories so let's get the show on the road.
As Easter approaches very late this year we have many charts, kits and even some papercraft for you to enjoy.
Kits
Focusing first on our new Eastern European kits which are all excellent value for money we have some cute new kits by Luca-S (Moldova)
From Merejka (Poland), we have endearing designs featuring bears and little girls.
From MP Studios (Russia), Bedtime Stories with a mother fox and her cub.
From Letistitch (Moldova) we have a mixture of fantasy, flowers and needle minders.
From Riolis (Lithuania) two designs that suggest the coming of Spring: a girl collecting flowers (illustrated) and a fox in a woodland glade.
Moving westwards, from our old friends Permin of Copenhagen, we have Christmas in Town Advent Calendar - and there's just about enough time to make it before next Christmas.
Lanarte have released a third 2025 Collection with flower designs by Marjolein Bastin. Please ask for details if you're a fan of hers. At the same time they've brought back an old favourite Vera the Mouse.
There's a demure, old-fashioned lady with her embroidery on a train, Elizabeth by the ever popular John Clayton and also two new cute animal designs from Love Country by Heritage Crafts.
Bothy Threads will be introducing a whole new set of the sugary-sweet Gorjuss kits in April, each with cute girl and interesting printed background. Watch this space (and remember to brush your teeth).
Kreinik The Light at the End of the Tunnel
We had another delivery of Petite Treasure Braid from Rainbow Gallery and a few Kreinik. (although only some of those requested by our customers). We've expanded our stock to include the complete range of Rainbow Gallery petite treasure braid.
Anne has revised her conversion chart from Kreinik #4 to petite treasure braid as best she could without the complete set of Kreinik.
Accessories
We've added a few more Kind Fox wooden accessories, both stylish and useful.
There are also three quirky needle minders from Barefoot Designs where the magnets are encased in a matching plastic shape.
Bargain Basement
We're offering more and more items in the bargains section for our stock clearance sale.
Because of postage costs, we can only offer these items for UK delivery.
Vacation
We, like many other small UK businesses, have been bludgeoned with more and more red tape over the past few years. So we're planning to take a break some time in April to recharge our depleted batteries. This means the shopping cart will be unavailable for a week or two during April.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience. We hope to be return recharged and re-invigorated!
And Finally
Our title this month is from a poem by our perennial favourite poet Emily Dickinson:
«A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period
When March is scarcely here»
We think she meant the word 'light' to be taken figuratively, a light that we feel rather than see with our eyes. The light of hope and optimism.
We hope you agree and we wish you the lightest of Aprils and the pleasure of your stitching.

Teach the Daffodils to Dance |
A warm welcome to our March 2025 newsletter!
Most manufacturers have been holding back new releases for the upcoming shows in Cologne and Nashville. You can expect to see lots more new charts and kits when these shows have finished.
We also have some bad news for EU customers.
Kits
New from RTO is a cute ballet girl and cat entitled Now I`ll Teach You! (Illustrated) The kit comes with Zweigart fabric, DMC floss and chart, needle and instructions.
The Stitch Company has made up kits of some cute and colourful designs by Soda Stitch. These are the original designs but now kitted up with materials included.
Permin has released a second 2025 collection with more cartoon animals in time for the annual needlecraft show in Cologne. Please let us know if there's anything that takes your fancy!
Charts
There have been fewer new designs from the US in the past weeks but that's about to change after the Nashville trade show which takes place next week.
We've found that Letistitch have introduced some charts of mid size design - all under 200 x 200 stitches but still a challenge!
Supplies
Some better news on the Kreinik front! Finally we had one delivery from Rainbow Gallery with Petite Treasure Braid and Wisper along with some Kreinik braid. Not everything we'd ordered but a start. Let's hope this trend continues.
We now have some pretty little wooden accessories from Kind Fox needle minders, scissors holders, needle holders and floss cutters. We've only chosen a few of a huge range so please ask us if you have any special theme.
European Union (EU)
We have finally conceded defeat in our attempts to offer value for money to customers in the EU.
We have ceased operation in the EU for the foreseeable future (but we're still offering our products to countries outside the bloc, like Switzerland, Norway, etc.)
For the past few years the EU has embarked on a crusade to make life as difficult as possible for non-EU companies servicing EU customers - especially the smaller ones like us. The bureaucracy has introduced new rules and regulations at regular intervals presumably with the intention of protecting its resident businesses against foreign competition. These are tariffs by another name. Reduced competition simply means higher prices for EU citizens as the EU bureaucracy increases costs for EU businesses.
The latest batch of regulations would have required us to provide safety instructions for each of our 20000 products in all EU languages and engage some third party at great expense to pass customer enquiries to us! This is the straw that has broken this camel's back. The net result is that big multinationals will have more of the market to themselves as the economies of scale make the bureaucracy relatively cheaper for them.
We can only apologise to our loyal EU customers and hope that your overlords come to their senses. We'll continue to monitor the situation but we expect it to be years before common sense is once again welcome in the EU hierarchy.
And Finally
Our title this month comes from a Poem called The Winds of March by Patience Strong (English poet and lyricist, 1907-1990)
«Teach the daffodils to dance.
Through your ravings harsh and strong
Thrushes thread a golden song.
Cleanse the air, make fresh the earth
for the season of rebirth.»
So we hope that the sense of rebirth inspires you to start new projects - or re-start old ones - and we wish you a very pleasant and calm March.

Shadows are not quite as dark |
Hello and welcome to our February 2025 newsletter.
This month we have new kits and charts and an update to the long running Kreinik floss story so let's get off our marks.
Kits
New from RTO is a delightful kit titled Everything will be fine (illustrated) featuring a little girl hugging her teddy.
We have new collections from Permin (now) and Bothy Threads (soon)
Permin are the first this year to release a new Collection and you can see it on our Catalogue page.
Bothy Threads have a new Collection coming out on the 4th February so watch this space for images.
It's now the Chinese Year of the Snake and we found some relevant kits: Black Gold Snake and Oriental Serpent, both by Panna.
Of course, even if you're not an ophiologist (I had to look it up!) these designs are stylish and attractive.
There's also a colourful Chinese New Year procession - Chinese Dragon by RTO.
Charts
Mirabilia's Merry Merry has been a very popular design. Unfortunately when we re-ordered the embellishment packs Mill Hill were temporarily out of stock. We hope they will arrive with our next order.
Bella Fillipina have continued their fairy story theme with The Enchanted Rose from Beauty and the Beast which will be in stock soon.
The Kurse of Kreinik strikes again!
As you may know Rainbow Gallery took on the production of Kreinik Thread about a year ago. We sometimes wonder whether Kreinik has a hex on it as we've been waiting for two months now for a delivery from Rainbow Gallery of Petite Treasure braid and Kreinik braid.
We had hoped we'd reached the end of this long-running saga but it looks like there are some more surprises still to come.
And Finally
Our title is from a poem by Patience Strong:
"... And so it seems in daily life the shadows come and go
We cannot have the light without the shadow - this we know
And so when cares depress you and you cannot see a gleam
Remember shadows are not quite as dark as they may seem."
from Shadows by Patience Strong, English poet, (1907-1990)
As the dark days here in the North gradually retreat in Winter's annual battle with Spring, we sometimes need of a bit of a lift so we wish you a fair and fulfilling February. |

Four Seasons fill the measure of the year |
Happy New Year and a warm welcome to our brief January 2025 newsletter.
We have just a little bit of news this month as most suppliers and makers have been otherwise occupied! They still found time to release some new patterns, though. And we have some news for our long-suffering EU customers (see later).
The latest Mirabilia design Merry Merry is a lady very festively attired. We've sold out of this pattern right now but we do still have a few embellishment packs.
Bella Filipina's Seasons Mermaid Mandala (illustrated) has four mermaids in a diamond and lots of beads! And we have plenty of embellishment packs as well.
Cottage Garden Samplings have added a special addition to their Fabulous House series Tudor-Style house.
Nora Corbett has added extended her Doll House series with Kitchen, Living Room and Dining Room.
And of course there are lots of new Christmas designs coming soon so there will be no excuse for next Christmas!
Something to look out for: Cottage Garden Samplings will have a new 12 part monthly series beginning in June and featuring woodland creatures.
We've also received some new thread/floss organisers:
Luca-S have new wood floss organisers for storing up to 50 threads.
And we have floss drops in two styles which are plastic and re-usable.
We must thank our long suffering EU customers for their patience while one problem or another has bugged our attempts to handle EU import regulations. Our EU VAT agent went out of business after a couple of years so we've been busy hooking up with another one. We hope this will be a more long-lasting arrangement!
This process is nearly complete so we expect to offer our full service some time next week. Thank you again for putting up with the frustrations.
And Finally
Our title is taken from a poem by John Keats, an English poet whose short life lasted from 1795-1821.
«Four Seasons fill the measure of the year;
There are four seasons in the mind of man:
He has his lusty Spring, when fancy clear
Takes in all beauty with an easy span:
He has his Summer, when luxuriously
Spring's honied cud of youthful thought he loves
To ruminate, and by such dreaming high
Is nearest unto heaven: quiet coves
His soul has in its Autumn, when his wings
He furleth close; contented so to look
On mists in idleness--to let fair things
Pass by unheeded as a threshold brook.
He has his Winter too of pale misfeature,
Or else he would forego his mortal nature.»
Let's all hope - beyond hope - that 2025's seasons bring us peace, contentment and prosperity! |
