This beautiful historical sampler shows the old land, Europe's greatest fruit growing area which is south-west of Hamburg. One of the motifs shows a typical half timbered house of the region.
The same motifs are repeated in many European samplers with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden beneath the Tree of Knowledge entwined by the serpent. The wreath carried by angels with a crown symbolises eternity. On the left is a carnation vase, symbol of happiness and a water carrier. Joshua and Kaleb are returning from the promised land with grapes. On the right is a lemon tree with fruit, a square symbolic of godly order, a bird and Justitia.
The large scale black and white charts are printed 10 stitches to approximately 2 centimetres with key on two A3 sheets. The design uses 18 shades of stranded cottons in whole cross stitch only. The stitch count is 220 by 200.
