This colourful historical sampler is from the Biedermeier Period ( 1815 - 1848); romantic, sentimental, melancholy and pastoral and was probably worked around 1820. It is a reproduction of an original on display in the German Sampler Museum in Celle.
The traditional alphabets are accompanied by motifs of flowers and birds, butterfly, a faithful dog, a monument under a weeping willow, a house by the river and a small temple. The central motif is of two girls in the dress of the period.
The large scale black and white charts are printed 10 stitches to approximately one inch on four A3 sheets. The pattern is worked in whole cross stitch, four sided stitch and Algerian eyelet stitch using 34 shades of stranded cottons. The stitch count is 270 by 220.
