A lovely historical sampler from the later Biedermeier period with alphabets and romantic motifs. The original is displayed in the German Sampler Museum in Celle.
The series of motifs include a lyre, flower basket with roses and forget-me-nots for love and friendship, the flower wreath symbolising eternity, symbols for Christ, the parrot for the Virgin Mary and an hourglass for time running out.
The large scale black and white charts are printed 10 stitches to approximately one inch on two A3 sheets with a further sheet of enlarged charts or 18 of the smaller motifs, some of which are worked in petit point. The sampler is worked in ceoss stitch, satin stitch, backstitch, eyelet stitches and petit point using 18 shades of stranded cottons. The stitch count is 230 by 150.
