This beautiful sampler is recreated from an historical sampler dating from 1809. The original is displayed in the German Sampler Museum in Celle.
The same motifs are repeated in many European samplers with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden beneath the Tree of Knowledge entwined by the serpent. Above that is a more unusual motif of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. The wreath carried by angels with a crown symbolises eternity. On the left is another unusual picture of Christ resurrected, with a basket of fruit symbolises plenty above. On the right below the village scene with church, Joshua and Kaleb are returning from the promised land with grapes and in the lower right corner Daniel in the lions' den.
The large scale black and white charts are printed 10 stitches to approximately 2 centimetres on four A3 sheets with futher enlarged charts of two motifs which are worked in petit point. The design uses 22 shades of stranded cottons in cross stitch, backstitch and petit point. The stitch count is 310 by 240.
