This colourful historical sampler is from the Biedermeier Period ( 1815 - 1848); romantic, sentimental, melancholy and pastoral. It is a reproduction of an original on display in the German Sampler Museum in Celle.
The traditional alphabets are accompanied by motifs of flowers and birds, ruined castle and landscape with house. The central motif is a flower wreath bound with a blue ribbon to symbolise eternal friendship and love.
The large scale black and white charts are printed 10 stitches to approximately 2 centimetres on two A3 sheets. There are further enlarged charts of the small areas of petit point used for the stitcher's name and date and a secret symbol - perhaps a sweetheart's initial. The pattern is worked in whole cross stitch and petit point using 36 shades of stranded cottons. The stitch count is 210 by 280.
