Underlined stitch | A counted thread stitch This is worked in horizontal rows and each cross stitch is underlined by a horizontal straight stitch before the next cross is worked. |

Up and down buttonhole stitch | A free embroidery stitch A variation on buttonhole stitch. Start as buttonhole stitch working downwards but then insert the needle at the bottom and close to the previous stitch as shown. |

Upright cross stitch | A counted thread stitch . Working from left to right bring needle out at left and make a horizontal stitch across four threads, bring out two threads back and two threads down. Then work second bar of cross four threads above bringing out two stitches to the right and two stitches down ready for the next stitch. |
Upright gobelin stitch | A counted thread stitch used extensively in needlepoint This is often trammed to make it more hard wearing Work trammed stitch from left to right then pull needle through one thread down and one thread to the left, then insert it over two threads directly above to form upright stitch and come out in position for next stitch two threads down and one to left. Continue like this row after row. |

Upright rice stitch | A counted thread stitch. A variation of rice stitch where the base stitch is an upright cross over four horizontal and four vertical threads with each arm crossed by a short stitch over two threads at right angles. The following row is offset to interlock as shown. See also triple rice stitch. |
