Today is the 30th birthday of punk in the UK - according to the BBC anyway. For those of us in the UK old enough to remember, Punk is that nihilistic anti-musical expression of teenage rebellion imported from the US in the days of the 3 day week and the 'winter of discontent'. A few years before, there had even been talk of petrol (known as gas in the US) rationing - coupons were issued by the UK government but never used. Punks were characterised by their willingness to embrace anything anarchical or anti-establishment. They seemed to find Nazi symbols especially useful in their mission to offend.
Punk followed a long tradition of teenage rebellion - trad, swing, bebop, rock'n'roll, James Dean, the Stones. The process continues. Every generation reinvents sex and teenage angst and feels the need to tell those of us who would rather forget all about it all over again.
Perhaps surprisingly, very few people under 30 know anything about punk rock. The Impressionist puts this down to the absence of any sense of culture in current society. In a world that quickly buries its mistakes and 'moves on', culture is something to be reinvented for the benefit of the elite. At least the punks had something to kick against.
