The internet geeks are delighted with themselves that they've found yet another way to litter the world with useless information. I speak of blogging no less.
A quick trawl round the plethora of blog feeds instantly reveals a vast landscape littered with vacuous and inconsequential nonsense. If, in the Age of the Soundbite, you thought it was impossible to trivialise the world further then blogs will make you think again.
The problem for visual arts people is that our content is, er, visual and its comprehension is beyond the capability of (most) current computer systems. The internet geeks' creation can comprehend only syntactic content. Thus we find the rambling, the meaningless and the misspelt given precedence over the terse, the pointed and the subliminal.
Here's an example irrigated at random from the colon of the web: '... Having no-one to love, or who loves you passionately, a.k.a. being single, on Valentine’s day, is depressing and mind numbing.' Altogether now - Awwww, Bless. Hanging is too good for these people. And yet, there they are weighing down the wires with their wasted electrons.
So we just have to grin and bear it, at least until some ubernerd comes up with an image semantic analyser. And then, watch out art critics. Today the internet, tomorrow the world.
