This lovely historical sampler is from the romantic period from 1815 - 1848 when the fashion was to embroider pastoral scenes. This small sampler comes from a clerical family from Ottendorf near Cuxhaven. This recreation of an original from the German Sampler Museum in Celle.

The motifs in this sampler are church, God's house on earth, cherry sprays, shell with pear all symbolising health and fortune, flower basket and garland the symbols of friendship and love, cornucopia for plenty, crawfish represents man's characteristics, the tree is Christianity, carnation passionate love. The border of small roses and forget-me-nots are for love and beauty, faith and friendship.
The large scale black and white charts are printed 10 stitches to approximately 1 inch with key on six A3 sheets. The pattern is worked in whole cross stitch, star stitch and four sided stitch using 15 shades of stranded cottons on a stitch count of 240 by 240.

40 count 100% linen evenweave fabric in sandstone;
DMC stranded cottons sorted onto cards;
needle, chart and instructions.
