Wild animals captivate us with their grace and beauty, their compelling strength and sensitivity, but we are increasingly aware of just how vulnerable they and their habitats have become. Knitwear designers Ruth Herring and Karen Manners have been inspired by this predicament of global proportion to create no fewer than 19 fresh and exciting wildlife designs in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature, who received royalties from this book.
They have prepared a wide range of styles and garments for all ages: Mother matches baby in soft blue-and-white polar bear and baby seal designs, while father and son both sport proud lioness sweaters. There are suits and tunics as well as jumpers, cardigans and dresses. The style of each garment ingeniously reflects the characters of the animals: Swans float across a cool, classical cardigan; splashes of zebra stripes trimmed with black fringes make a wild party outfit. Myriad designs and motifs make each garment refreshingly unusual. Badgers peek through meadows of bright wild flowers, embroidery and graphic patterns elegantly frame the golden eagle, and wildlife conservation slogans appear unexpectedly on sleeves and backs.
All the necessary techniques for knitting the garments are clearly described in a special section at the end of the book and a full-colour stitch chart accompanies each design.
Many celebrities, including Susan George, Imran Khan, Marie Helvin, Michael Palin and the Rutherford family have modelled for the book. Their collaboration with the designers and the World Wide Fund for Nature has produced a book which pays homage to the world of nature and spreads the message of conservation as well as being a treasure trove for all knitting enthusiasts.
This 1989 first edition hardback book is in very good condition. The 96 pages are clean and fresh although a little yellow. The dust cover is complete.
